A 19-year-old Shelter Island man was arrested Sunday on charges of attempted rape, assault and criminal possession of cocaine, Shelter Island police said, adding his "numerous assaultive acts" injured the victim.

Carlos Geovanny Orozco-Rodriguez was detained overnight, and arraigned Monday before the Shelter Island Justice Court, police said.

He then was sent to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility after failing to post a $50,000 cash bail or a $100,000 bond, police said in a statement.

An order of protection was issued for the victim; the justice court was not immediately available to say whether Orozco-Rodriguez was represented by counsel.

"The defendant did forcefully attempt to have sexual intercourse with a female victim, and did subject the victim to numerous assaultive acts resulting in physical injury," the police statement said.

Orozco-Rodriguez was represented at his arraignment by Westhampton Beach defense attorney Daniel Russo, who declined to comment Tuesday. His case is now being handled by the Suffolk County Legal Aid Society, which did not respond to a request for comment.
