Nassau County police say they are investigating the robbery attempt of a Bethpage gas station.
At about 1:12 a.m. Wednesday, a masked man entered the Exxon station at 100 Hicksville Rd., placing on the counter a note demanding cash, police said.
The clerk, a man, 36, was returning from the back of the building when the suspect told him to read the note. The masked man also lifted his shirt, showing what appeared to be a handgun in his waistband, police said.
The clerk opened the register drawer to show the suspect there was no money, according to a news release.
The suspect, described as about 5-foot-10 and wearing a ski mask or scarf, a black hooded sweatshirt and black gloves, then left the building, police said.
Anyone with more information can call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All information will be kept confidential.
