A Southampton man has been arrested, charged with reckless operation of a vessel, failure to report an accident involving personal injury and other counts after New York State Police said he crashed his boat into a jetty in Sag Harbor on Monday, seriously injuring two passengers.
Police said the operator, identified as Peter Mangiameli, 57, also left the scene while those passengers were receiving medical attention.
The two passengers, whose identities were not released, were transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries that police said included a broken rib, leg fracture and vertebrae fracture. Their conditions were unknown Tuesday.
State police said Sag Harbor Village police received a report at 10:07 p.m. Monday that a boat had struck the jetty in Sag Harbor Bay.
Village police then requested the assistance of state police, who sent investigators from its Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
That investigation determined Mangiameli was operating a 2023 35-foot cruise boat from the bay into the harbor when the vessel struck the stone jetty causing what police described as "significant damage." There were eight passengers aboard the vessel, police said.
Police said after the collision Mangiameli docked the boat, but left the scene. It was not immediately clear who notified police of the collision.
In addition to the reckless operation charge, which is a violation, and the failure to report the accident, which is a felony, Mangiameli was charged with second-degree assault for recklessly causing serious physical injury, as well as failure to provide identification as a vessel operator, third-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment and what police described as "multiple violations" of state navigation law.
Arraignment details were not immediately available. It was not immediately clear if Mangiameli is represented by counsel.
Police said the investigation remained ongoing and asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who had additional information to contact them at 631-756-3300.
