Bond set at $1M in hit-and-run deaths of Nassau motorcyclists

A Westchester County driver was held Monday on $1-million bond or $250,000 cash bail in Sunday's hit-and-run deaths of two Nassau motorcyclists on the New York State Thruway, state police said.

Luis Munoz, 24, of Ossining, was arraigned in Orange County on aggravated vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated in the deaths of Rafaelito DeJesus, 23, of Valley Stream, and Melissa Rupa, 25, of Mineola, police said.

The two were on DeJesus' motorcycle going north on the Thruway in the Town of Woodbury when a motorist plowed into them from behind at about 1:10 a.m. Sunday, police said. They were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The motorist drove off, but left a car license plate and bumper at the crash scene, police said.

Munoz was arrested by Woodbury police after the Orange County medical examiner, who had just finished working at the crash scene, noticed an erratic driver and called police, state troopers said. His car was missing a plate and bumper, state police said.

DeJesus' family had said the two were on their way to visit Rupa's family in the Hudson Valley. Relatives of the two could not be reached Monday.
