A man stabbed a co-worker at the Town of Brookhaven landfill, then leaped to his death off a catwalk, Suffolk County police said on Wednesday.

The stabbing victim, Milton Diaz, 22, of Brentwood, was in stable condition at Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue, police said. His attacker, Jesus Saravia, 68, of Central Islip, was pronounced dead at the same hospital.

Homicide detectives were investigating the attack, which took place in Yaphank about 9:30 a.m., police said.

Jack Krieger, a town spokesman, said the attack occurred at the Materials Recovery Facility, which is located on the landfill. Green Stream Recycling, the private firm that runs the recycling site, referred a request for comment to the police. No town employees were involved, the town spokesman said.

Krieger said the recycling center uses conveyor belts to carry materials up to a second floor, where machinery is located, and workers then "pick out the recycling, take out the stuff that is not supposed to be there."

No further details were immediately available.
