A Lawrence man who was posing as a Nassau County police officer has been charged with burglarizing an apartment in Inwood Friday, authorities said.

According to a news release, Robert White, 48, of John Street, forced his way into the victim’s second-floor bedroom apartment at 6:30 p.m. “claiming to be a Nassau County police officer” who was there to collect rent money and threatened to arrest the victim if he did not pay him.

Police said the victim, 21, handed White an undisclosed amount of cash.

White escaped but was later found and arrested at his home, a police spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said that sometime during the incident White “blurted out an address and it ended up being his address.”

White is charged with second-degree burglary, two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and first-degree criminal impersonation. He was scheduled for arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
