Central Islip teen charged in theft of car with child inside from Brentwood driveway

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested and charged after he allegedly stole a car in Brentwood while a child was seated inside, Suffolk police said.
The teen stole a 2014 Honda Civic that was running in the driveway of a Whipple Street home around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to a Suffolk County Police Department news release.
After an "extensive" overnight search, officers located the Honda and the 3-year-old around 5 a.m. Friday on Bretton Road in Hauppauge, police said. The car and child were found about three miles from home, according to Google Maps.
The child, who police said was unharmed, was transported for evaluation at Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip.
Detectives arrested and charged the Central Islip teen with third-degree grand larceny "in connection with the incident," police said.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to the news release. Detectives with Suffolk police's Third Squad in Bay Shore ask anyone with information to call them at 631-854-8352 or to anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
