A 16-year-old girl was shot Wednesday morning on the shoulder while sitting in the backseat of a car in Central Islip, Suffolk police said.

Police said two groups of teens were in a physical altercation on Anne Lane in Central Islip at 11:45 a.m., splitting up into two vehicles once the fight was broken up.

The teen, who witnessed the fight, was sitting in a Toyota Camry near Oakland and Evergreen avenues at 11:50 a.m. when she was shot, police said. She was struck a half a mile away from where the fight took place.

The name and hometown of the teen were not immediately released. She was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
