A Huntington man was arrested on charges of inappropriately touching an 8-year-old girl at the Huntington Public Library on Sunday afternoon, Suffolk police said.
Christopher Elgut, 28, was taken into custody after he approached the girl at about 4:30 p.m. as she stood with her mother by the library’s front counter, police said.
Elgut picked up the girl and “inappropriately touched her” behind a column where he had placed her, police said.
The girl screamed and Elgut ran away, police said. Police said officers found Elgut nearby 20 minutes later after broadcasting a description of him to the public.
Elgut was charged with first-degree sex abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal possession of marijuana. He is to be held overnight at the Fifth Precinct and will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.
