Jose Gaitan, 48, of Huntington Station, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he fatally struck a pedestrian on Depot Road in Huntington Station late Sunday, April 17, 2016, Suffolk County police said. Credit: SCPD

A Huntington Station man was driving drunk when he struck and killed a pedestrian crossing the street late Sunday, Suffolk County police said.

Jose Gaitan, 48, was operating a 1999 Nissan Maxima south on Depot Road in Huntington Station at about 10:30 p.m. when his car struck Lucas Reyes, 31, who was trying to run across the road near East 12th Street, police said.

Reyes, also of Huntington Station, was taken by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said in a news release Monday morning.

Gaitan was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Central Islip. Arraignment information was not yet available Monday afternoon, records show.

His car was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing.
