Cops: Dye pack explosion foils Bethpage bank robbery
A man walked into a TD Bank branch Thursday afternoon in Bethpage, walked up to a teller, took out a white bag, demanded money and fled — after a dye pack in the stolen money exploded, police said.
Now Nassau County police are looking for the man.
They’re asking that anyone with information regarding the robbery at the bank, located at 145 Stewart Ave., call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
Police said the incident took place at about 2:15 p.m.
They said the man is described as being about 40-50 years of age, between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-7, 150-160 pounds, unshaven with a moustache and wearing a hooded gray jacket, a black New York Yankees hat, dark sunglasses and jeans.
Police said the man approached the teller with a white plastic bag and demanded the teller place money in the bag — money without a dye pack. But the teller placed a dye pack in the bag, anyway, police said. And as the robber exited the bank police said the teller saw the pack explode.
There were six employees in the bank when it was robbed.
No one was injured, police said.
