Cops: Man stole antique firefighting tools
A man wheeling a shopping cart full of antique firefighting equipment down Old Country Road in Westbury early Saturday morning was later arrested on theft charges when cops determined he stole the equipment from a nearby firefighting museum, police said.
The man, Carey Sutton, 57, also of Westbury, is accused of stealing "numerous metal items including an antique brass firefighting Navy fog nozzle, two antique brass fire nozzles and an antique brass hose holder," according to police.
The items are worth thousands of dollars, police said.
Police said he took them from a fenced-in storage area at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center in neighboring Garden City.
A law enforcement source said Sutton may have gained access by cutting through the fence or by using an existing hole in the fence.
Sutton is to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead on charges including grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
