Cops: Man with stolen gun charged
A Roosevelt man who tried to elude detectives investigating recent shooting incidents was arrested Tuesday on weapons charges after he was found carrying a stolen loaded handgun, Nassau County police said.
Detectives from the Special Investigations Squad were looking into recent shootings in Roosevelt when they saw Ludlow Haynes, 20, walking on Williams Street at about 4:40 p.m., police said.
After Haynes made eye contact with detectives, he ran into his residence at 35 Williams St. while holding his waistband, police said in a news release.
Detectives pursuing Haynes said he removed a black, loaded .40-caliber handgun from his waistband and threw it to the ground. Police later discovered the gun had been reported stolen in Pennsylvania.
A police spokesman could not say Wednesday if Haynes is a suspect in the shootings under investigation and did not provide any more details on those shootings. But police have previously reported at least five shooting incidents in Roosevelt between early December and early January.
Haynes is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of stolen property and possession of a dangerous weapon.
He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
