A man pretending to be a water-meter reader burglarized the home of a 90-year-old Mineola woman on Friday afternoon, Nassau County police said.

To distract her while he rummaged through the Washington Avenue home, the burglar told the woman to help him by turning on the water in another room along with other busywork -- allowing him to be alone and steal $200.

"He was not wearing any type of water company uniform nor did he display any type of identification," police said in a statement.

At one point during the visit, she found him leaving her bedroom -- and she grew suspicious, police said.

When she questioned him, he told her that he had to return to his truck for paperwork. He never returned.

She then looked in her dresser drawer to find the $200 missing.

The suspect is described as between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10, about 50 years old, wearing dark clothes and gloves. The man remains at large. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
