A 22-year-old man walking along Hempstead Avenue in Hempstead was assaulted and robbed early Sunday morning and ended up in Mercy Hospital in what Nassau County police described as serious but stable condition.

The attack took place at 12:45 a.m. near Adams Avenue, police said.

Police said the victim, whose identity has not been released, was jumped from behind by an assailant -- or, possibly, assailants -- who robbed him of his wallet, cell phone and an iPod.

During the robbery police said the man suffered head trauma and a shoulder injury.

Police are searching for the attacker -- or attackers -- and are asking that anyone with information regarding the incident contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.

All calls will remain confidential, police said.
