A 40-year-old man faces an attempted murder charge after he tried to suffocate his Bethpage father and then robbed him before fleeing, police said Monday.

James J. Crichton, who has no known address, was arrested Sunday night in the March 25 case. In addition to second-degree attempted murder, Crichton was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary, police said.

Police said that Crichton entered his father's house at about 9:20 a.m., assaulted him, attempted to suffocate him with a pillow, then robbed him of cash and a credit card before fleeing the scene.

His father was eventually taken to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment. The father, who survived the attack, was not identified.

Police gave no motive for the attack. Crichton is to be arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
