The NYPD arrested a 20-year-old Brooklyn man after he allegedly fired a stolen .45-caliber handgun at officers who were chasing him early Friday in Brooklyn, officials said.

Arrested in the case was Bobby Boomer, who police said was first spotted with a firearm in his waistband as he walked toward a fried chicken restaurant at the corner of Mill and Hicks streets.

Boomer began running as Officers Michael Walsh and Angelo Pizzarro approached him, and then turned and fired at them, officials said. Boomer then dropped the weapon in a doorway and kept running toward Red Hook Houses where he was arrested by emergency service unit cops inside an apartment at 15 Mill St., an NYPD spokesman said.

Neither Walsh, who lives in Suffolk County, nor Pizzarro, of Queens, was injured and didn't fire at the fleeing suspect, the spokesman said.

"Fortunately, our police officers escaped injury this time," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement after the incident. "They continue to risk their lives to protect New Yorkers in some of the city's poorest neighborhoods, confronting suspects, all too many armed with illegal handguns."

Earlier in the week Kelly angered some politicians from minority communities when he challenged them to do more to acknowledge crime and gun violence in those neighborhoods. Kelly's comment Friday on the Red Hook incident indicated he was not losing sight of the issue.

In a related development, the NYPD said detectives intensified their search for the suspect in the July 5 shooting of Officer Brian Groves, of Patchogue, inside the Seward Park Housing on the Lower East Side. Groves, the ninth officer to be shot this year, was hit in the chest but escaped serious injury when the bullet was stopped by his protective vest.

Police carried out a canvass Friday of all 179 apartments in the Seward Park Housing. A reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the still unidentified gunman has been increased to $22,000, a police spokesman said.

The suspect in the Groves shooting is described as a male black in his 20s, slight build, with hair in cornrows with yellow beads at the end.
