Nassau and Suffolk police will add extra patrols on Thursday, targeting drivers who pass stopped school buses.

The stepped up enforcement, financed by a state grant, is part of a statewide initiative called the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee Operation Safe Stop.

Police warn offenders that the first-time fine for passing a stopped school bus is a minimum of $250, as well as 5 points on a driver's license. The minimum fine for a second conviction, within three years, is $600, Nassau police said in a Monday morning news release.
