Two men attacked a bar patron from behind, knocking him to the ground and stabbing him "repeatedly," during an altercation in Hempstead early Monday, police said.

Nassau County police said the victim was hospitalized in stable condition. A search is on for the two suspects.

Police said the incident occurred inside Las Gemalas Bar on Main Street just before 2 a.m. The victim, identified only as a 33-year-old man, was attempting to leave the bar through a rear door when he was attacked, police said.

It was not clear what provoked the attack.

The victim was able to run next door and call police.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
