A driver in Coram, impaired by a drug or drugs, catalyzed a three-vehicle crash Wednesday night when he crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a sedan head-on, according to the Suffolk County police.

The crash happened about 9 p.m. on Middle Country Road, just east of Route 112: The 1998 Mercury sedan being driven by Patrick Boyle crossed into eastbound traffic and hit a 2008 Honda sedan, according to a Suffolk police news release. A 2008 Chevrolet van then hit the Honda.

Only Boyle, 28, of Manorville, was hurt, with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to the release, which did not describe the extent of his injuries or his current condition.

The scene was cleaned up before midnight, according to a Coram Fire Department dispatcher who said he wasn't authorized to give his name.

Rescuers were "there in seconds," he said. "Literally, it happened in front of the firehouse."

Boyle was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and will be arraigned at a criminal court at an undetermined time, the release said. Police did not say why the officers suspected him of being impaired, or by which drug or drugs.

Boyle could not be reached for comment. Arraignment information was not available Thursday night.
