A Holbrook man evading arrest nearly struck a Nassau detective with his car, then tried to ram at least one pursuing police vehicle during a chase that led from his home to Syosset and back, authorities said Wednesday.

Daniel Heckman, 30, violated an order of protection on Jan. 4 in Hicksville when he took his ex-wife's phone from her vehicle, Nassau police said. Nassau detectives showed up at his house on Patchogue Holbrook Road about 11:20 p.m. Monday to arrest him but instead, Heckman got into his 2017 Nissan, Maxima, revved the engine and lurched forward, forcing one detective to jump out of the way, authorities.

He then "erratically" backed out of his driveway and got onto the westbound Long Island Expressway, where he drove recklessly and the detectives radioed for help, Nassau police said. Suffolk police officers joined the pursuit, officials said.

Just past Exit 44, which leads to the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, a marked police vehicle with lights flashing and siren blaring got ahead of Heckman to slow him down, according to court records. Heckman drove on the shoulder and tried to hit the police vehicle, forcing the officer to swerve out of the way, court records show.

Heckman then drove onto the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway before switching to the Northern State Parkway, the court complaint said. He eventually reversed course and headed east on the LIE about 25 minutes into the pursuit, the complaint said.

Twice on the LIE, he swerved back and forth in the lanes of pursuing officers, according to court documents, forcing two police vehicles to take evasive action to avoid being hit.

When Heckman got home, he refused to leave his car, even though the door was open, Nassau police said.

As he reached toward the floor of his Nissan, a Suffolk police dog named Champ helped officers struggling to subdue Heckman, Nassau police said. He was taken into custody at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

Heckman was arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead on three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, three counts of unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, three counts of reckless driving and several vehicle and traffic laws, including speeding and improper passing, authorities said. He was also charged with petty larceny and two counts of second-degree criminal contempt in connection with the order of protection, Nassau police said.

He was held on a bail of $15,000 cash or bond. Heckman was represented by the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County, which has a policy of not commenting during the arraignment stage.
