A Valley Stream man was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury after he struck a pedestrian in Hempstead and fled, Nassau County police said.

Juan Sabastian Alvarado, 22, of East New York Avenue, was driving a 2008 Honda Civic east on Peninsula Boulevard about 11 p.m. Friday when he hit a 30-year-old man who was trying to cross from the south side of the road to the north side near Greenwich Street, police said in a news release.

The victim sustained a serious head injury, police said.

Alvarado initially left the scene but returned a short time later and was arrested, police said.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.

Attorney information for Alvarado was not immediately available.
