Commack driver ODs in Melville, causes crash, cops say

A driver lost consciousness from a drug overdose in Melville Thursday and crashed into a fire hydrant, which broke loose and struck a vehicle carrying a mother and her two children, Suffolk County police said.

Several callers told 911 they saw a motorist, identified as Michael Amico, 51, of Commack, driving recklessly in his Subaru before mounting a sidewalk on southbound Broadhollow Road near Spagnoli Road, police said.

There, a Land Rover leaving a parking lot was hit first by the hydrant, then broadsided by the Subaru, police said. The mother and children inside the Land Rover were not injured in the 6 p.m. crash, police said.

Amico’s vehicle stopped about 1,500 feet from the original crash, police said, and Melville firefighters who responded noticed the driver was unresponsive.

Rescuers administered Narcan at the scene to revive Amico before taking him to a hospital for observation and treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Amico was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and is expected to be arraigned at a later date at First District Court in Central Islip.
