Nassau County police arrested and charged six people Wednesday in New Cassel after seizing various drugs, an assault rifle and three pit bulls.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said police had received dozens of calls reporting suspicious activity and possible drug deals at the home on Fourth Avenue near Park Elementary School.

Narcotics detectives served a search warrant at noon Wednesday at where police said they found two ounces of crack cocaine, sedatives, opioids, ecstasy and drug paraphernalia such as measuring scales.

Ryder said detectives waited to serve the search warrant until noon when three children at the home had left the house. The children were taken to family members after the arrests.

Police found three pit bulls living in the garage in cages, covered in urine and feces in "inhumane conditions," Ryder said. The dogs were later seized by North Hempstead Animal Control, pending additional charges.

Police charged Yolanda Hyman, 37; Gilbert Robinson, 46; Craig Taylor, 55; Jermaine Porter, 26; Joseph Fountain, 36, all of New Cassel and Imani Hughes, 25, of Westbury, each with two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a weapon.

They were all set to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead. No defense attorney information was available.

"It's important for the community to be involved and be the eyes and ears of the police department," Ryder said. "We had dozens of calls from residents for disturbance of drug sales."

Inside the home, police also seized an AR-15 assault rifle leaning against the dresser and a high capacity magazine and scope laying out in the bedroom.

Police said several of those arrested were known gang members with a history of assault, drug and weapons charges.

Police were previously called to the home for a woman who fatally overdosed outside the home and separate reports of shots fired and drug arrests.
