A boater was arrested Saturday on a charge of boating while intoxicated after a Coast Guardsman saw him speed through a slowdown zone near Freeport, the Coast Guard said.

The 49-year-old boater, whose name wasn't released, was turned over to Nassau County police. He had been at dinner with friends earlier in the evening, the Coast Guard said. The boat was 19 feet long.

"He was boating recklessly and he sideswiped a navigational aide and proceeded to go under the Loop Parkway Bridge at a high speed of speed," said Petty Officer Robert Sebastiao. "I effected a vessel stop and determined that he was under the influence of alcohol."

No other information was immediately available.
