A New Cassel man driving two minors was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law after police spotted him struggling to stay in one lane on Wednesday night, police said.

Angel Maldonado, 22, was “failing to maintain a single lane” in a 2000 Mazda MPV with two 15-year-old passengers in New Cassel, Nassau County police said in a news release Thursday. Police did not provide information on any relation among them.

The arresting officer said the defendant was “unsteady on his feet,” his speech was slurred and his breath smelled strongly of alcohol, police said.

Maldonado was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 under Leandra’s Law, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, driving while intoxicated and multiple traffic law violations, police said.

Maldonado was arraigned Thursday, according to online court records. His bail was set at $2,500 bond or $1,250 cash, the records state.

Maldonado is represented by the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County. No one from that office could be reached Thursday.
