7 arrested in DWI checkpoint, more checkpoints planned, police say
Suffolk County police arrested seven people Friday night and early Saturday during a DWI checkpoint in Huntington as police ramp up patrols this weekend.
Police held the checkpoint at Church Street and New York Avenue from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. and screened 417 vehicles, police said.
Police arrested five people charged with driving while intoxicated, one person charged with driving while ability impaired by alcohol and one person charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.
Police across Long Island are conducting DWI patrols and checkpoints as part of a Mothers Against Drunk Driving campaign called Saturation Saturday before Labor Day weekend.
Nassau County police and village police departments will also hold a checkpoint Saturday night, funded through a county DWI grant and the governor’s traffic safety committee.
State Police have been cracking down since last weekend and will be making checkpoints until the holiday on Sept. 3.
