A Queens man accused of fatally striking a motorist while driving drunk on the Long Island Expressway was ordered held on $300,000 bond or $250,000 cash bail Friday, officials said.
Bonifacio Enriquez, 34, of College Point, allegedly struck Rooh Ul Ameen, 43, of Bay Shore, who had stopped to inspect damage to his car after hitting the median of the LIE in Jericho shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday, police said. Ameen was then hit and dragged by a second vehicle, police said.
Enriquez, who suffered undisclosed injuries, was arraigned in his hospital room Friday at Nassau University Medical Center on charges of driving while intoxicated, second-degree manslaughter and second-degree vehicular manslaughter.
He did not enter a plea.
His lawyer, a Legal Aid attorney, said Enriquez lives with his parents and works at a radiology company in Queens.
Ameen, a father of four young children, was returning from his job as an Uber driver in Manhattan when the accident occurred, police said.
His Toyota Camry struck the concrete median at about 2 a.m. while heading east in the high occupancy vehicle lane just west of Exit 41.
He was outside the sedan in the HOV lane, attempting to tie up a damaged front bumper, when he and his Camry were struck by Enriquez’s Ford Escape sport-utility vehicle, police said.
The victim was pushed into the roadway, where he was hit by a Nissan Altima and dragged about a half-mile, police said.
The driver of the Nissan, who remained at the scene, has not been charged.
