A Massapequa Park mother who drove off after hitting a car while trying to parallel park on Wednesday afternoon in Wantagh has been charged with driving while intoxicated and violating Leandra's Law because her 8-year-old son was a passenger, Nassau police said.

Valerie Decker, 46, was parking a 2017 Dodge Ram on Wantagh Avenue, the police said, when she collided with a parked 2019 Infinity with a 50-year-old woman sitting inside.

Responding to a report of an accident with a "disturbance," the police said they saw Decker leave the crash site, headed south on Wantagh Avenue. She was pulled over at the Merrick Road intersection and arrested around 3:25 p.m. Her son was turned over to a family member.

The defendant also was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and "multiple vehicle and traffic law violations," the police said.

Her arraignment is set for Thursday, when the name of any defense counsel may be released.
