Woman charged with damaging a Jesus statue at an East Islip church

A homeless woman is facing criminal charges for allegedly damaging a statue of Jesus at an East Islip church last week.
Suffolk police arrested Deyonna Subert on West Main Street in Bay Shore at 6:39 a.m. Wednesday following an investigation by Hate Crimes Unit detectives.
Subert, 41, will be held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday. She is charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a Class D felony.
The incident occurred late on May 15 at St. Mary’s Church on East Main Street.
