Feds: $7M in bogus checks, money orders seized at JFK

More than $7 million in counterfeit money orders and checks have been seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at Kennedy Airport, federal authorities said Monday.

Authorities said the seizures occurred at the airport's mail facility on March 23. The counterfeit items were in parcels arriving from Ghana and Nigeria.

The first seizure uncovered more than 6,500 counterfeit items from Ghana worth more than $6.7 million, officials said.

The second seizure contained 281 fake money orders from Nigeria, worth more than $300,000. The money orders were turned over to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, officials said.

Officials did not confirm any arrests in connection with the seizures. The investigation into the incidents are ongoing.
