Feds: Bronx gang members indicted
The U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of New York on Wednesday charged 40 members and associates of a notorious Bronx gang with murder, attempted murder, assault, racketeering, narcotics and firearm offenses, officials said.
The original indictment against Bronx Trinitarios Gang was filed against 50 members in December 2011, alleging the gang violated federal racketeering laws.
The indictment also claimed the gang was responsible for narcotics and firearms trafficking offenses. Wednesday's indictment was against 26 new defendants and 14 already charged with other offenses, officials said.
In 2009 and 2010, 43 members of the Manhattan Trinitarios Gang were charged with various racketeering, murder, and narcotics offenses, bringing the total number of defendants charged in the past three years to 119.
The BTG is a criminal organization operating primarily in the Bronx. It started in prison in the late 1980s and subsequently spread to the streets, officials said.
