An effort to help a Mastic woman move from her home Friday escalated into the stabbing of two men and an arrest, Suffolk police said.

It’s not clear what started the noontime fight at the home on Mastic Boulevard, but another resident there, David Schermerhorn, 61, stabbed one man in the back and another in the shoulder, police said.

The men involved were helping the woman move out of her home, police said.

Schermerhorn is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday on a charge of second-degree assault.

The victims’ wounds were not life-threatening, police said. Danny Douglas, 27, of Mastic Beach, was stabbed in the back and taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said. Eric Romaine, 48, of Mastic Beach, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Patchogue.

Detectives said the investigation is ongoing and ask witnesses to call them at 631-852-8752 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
