Five crashes on Long Island in a 10-hour span ending early Monday left three people dead and five injured, according to multiple police agencies.

About 2:50 a.m. Monday in Yaphank, the driver of a southbound 2015 BMW "veered into the northbound lane" of Bellport Avenue between Long Island Avenue and Horseblock Road, the Suffolk County Police Department said in a news release. The vehicle then "left the road and struck several trees," police said in the release.

A Yaphank Fire Department EMT pronounced one of the vehicle's passengers, Edgar Guevara Ramos, 22, of Bellport, dead at the scene, police said. The driver was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Two other passengers were taken to Stony Brook for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.

Suffolk detectives ask anyone with information regarding the single-vehicle crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.

Less than 90 minutes before, on the Northern State Parkway in Carle Place, state troopers responded to a crash west of Exit 31, and arrived to find a gray vehicle "in the tree line" off the eastbound lanes of the parkway with "the operator inside deceased," the state police said.

The driver, whose identity had not been released as of Monday evening pending notification of next of kin, was the vehicle's only occupant, according to the state police.

In Shirley late Sunday, a northbound 2017 Nissan SUV struck a 34-year-old pedestrian from Mastic, Suffolk police said in a separate release.

The SUV hit the male victim about 11:05 p.m. as he crossed William Floyd Parkway at the multilane intersection of Montauk Highway, the police said in the release. The pedestrian was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition, police said. The driver of the Nissan was not injured.

On Sunday about 7:23 p.m., a Flanders man was killed in a hit-and-run in Riverside,  Southampton Town police said Monday, adding that a driver faces charges in connection with the crash.

While on patrol, a Southampton Town police officer discovered Ever Eli Damian Mazat, 46, lying unconscious in the westbound lane of Flanders Road near Vail Avenue, police said. Flanders Northampton Ambulance responded to the scene, but Mazat died of his injuries, police said.

Following an investigation that temporarily closed Flanders Road, police determined Mazat was struck by a vehicle that had fled the scene.

Officers identified Silvia Alvarez De Reyes, 46, of Shirley as the driver who allegedly struck Mazat. Police arrested and charged her with leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality, a felony. She was held overnight for arraignment Monday at Southampton Town Justice Court. Information about the arraignment was not available late Monday.

In St. James late Sunday afternoon, the driver of a 2005 Toyota Camry was critically injured while pulling out of a driveway, Suffolk police said in a news release. A 2002 Jeep Cherokee struck the Toyota as it drove out of the driveway on Middle County Road about 5:35 p.m. Sunday, Suffolk police said in the release.

The 31-year-old driver of the Toyota was extricated from the car and transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said. The driver of the Jeep was not injured.
