A Flanders man was arrested early Thursday after Riverhead Town police said witnesses reported he was trying to steal tires and rims from a sport utility vehicle in Riverhead.

Anthony Murphy, 34, was charged with fourth-degree attempted grand larceny and possession of burglar’s tools after his arrest. Arraignment details were not immediately available.

Police said that officers responded to 911 calls at 3:50 a.m. reporting a man attempting to steal tires and rims from an unregistered 2014 Chevrolet Silverado on Old Country Road.

Witnesses told police that “a suspicious person at the location” had fled in the vehicle that officers, with assistance from State police troopers, were able to subsequently locate “a short distance from the scene,” police said.

There, police said, officers found Murphy with the vehicle. Police said their investigation determined that Murphy had “attempted to remove the passenger side tires and rims” from the Silverado. He was then arrested and charged.
