A registered sex offender who sexually assaulted a female cabdriver in Mount Sinai Tuesday faces attempted rape and assault charges, Suffolk County police said.

Francis Barrios, 34, who is homeless, is charged with performing a first-degree criminal sexual act, first-degree attempted rape, second-degree strangulation and third-degree assault, police said.

The taxi driver picked up Barrios at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson and during the cab ride he assaulted her, police said.

She crashed into a fence on Mount Sinai-Coram Road in Mount Sinai at 7:40 p.m. and then was sexually assaulted by Barrios, according to a news release.

Police initially responded to the crash after a passing motorist called 911, the release said.

The name of the cab company is being withheld to protect the identity of the victim, police said.

Barrios is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
