Garage remotes used to break into Hauppauge homes, cops say
Suffolk County police are urging Hauppauge residents to take safety precautions after reports of a person using stolen garage remotes to break into homes.
Police said they’ve received two recent reports of similar burglaries, one on Dale Court and another on Janet Court.
In each incident, the suspect opened an unlocked car parked in the driveway of the house and found the garage remote, police said.
The suspect then used the remote to open the garage, enter the home through a side door inside and then take personal belongings while the residents slept, police said.
Police advise area residents lock their vehicles and home entrances to garages and keep garage remotes out of sight.
Residents should report suspicious people to 631-852-COPS or 911.
