Gerard Terry makes court appearance on tax evasion charges

A federal prosecutor and a defense attorney said Tuesday that they are continuing to go over the voluminous records in the case of Gerard Terry, former leader of the North Hempstead Democratic Party, on tax evasion and obstruction charges.
Terry, of Roslyn Heights, was arrested in January in a complex scheme to avoid paying more than $1.4 million in taxes since 2000. He had been making more than $250,000-a-year from a number of public positions, officials said.
Terry resigned or was fired from various positions last year following a Newsday report that he owed the money in federal and state taxes.
Eastern District prosecutor Artie McConnell, and one of Terry’s defense attorneys, Susan Carman, of Garden City, spoke at a brief status conference in the U.S. District Court in Central Islip. They declined to comment afterward.
Terry, who has pleaded not guilty, has said his tax situation resulted from a “cascading series of health issues,” including open-heart surgery.
U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert set Oct. 11 as the date of the next status conference in the case.
