A man was found shot several times Monday night in Uniondale and pronounced dead at the scene, Nassau police said Tuesday night.

German Ismael Saravia Melendez, 37, of Uniondale, was lying on his side on the roadway when officers arrived after a 911 call of shots fired, followed by an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunfire-detection system, police said.

The victim was found in the vicinity of Macon Place and Irving Place, police said.

Police did not release other details, but said the investigation is ongoing.

A Macon Place resident said she heard what sounded like two firecracker pops while she was watching television, then silence for 30 seconds, followed by two more pops.

“My husband said ‘Those are gunshots,’ ” said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous. “I was kind of terrified.”
