A Greenlawn man has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting early Thursday in the hamlet that left a woman with serious injuries, the Suffolk County Police Department said.

Eric Giovanni Whilby, 37, faces charges of first-degree assault and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly shooting the 40-year-old victim about 12:52 a.m. on Leigh Street and then fleeing the scene, according to the police.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said. An update on her condition was not immediately available.

Whilby was taken into custody about 8:40 a.m. on Thursday in New Rochelle, the police said. The New York State Police and New Rochelle police assisted in the arrest. Police earlier said the shooting took place during a domestic incident but provided no additional information late Thursday.

Whilby will be held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
