A man suspected of slashing two people with a machete in Greenport last week has been arrested in Rhode Island and will be extradited to face assault charges, Southold Town police said.

Esvin Rolando Escobar, 26, of Greenport, was arrested early Thursday in Central Falls, Rhode Island, by town detectives, Rhode Island State Police and members of the Regional Fugitive Task Force of the U.S. Marshal’s Service, police said.

He will be extradited and arraigned in Southold Justice Court on a charge of assault in the first degree, police said, adding that additional charges are likely.

Escobar has previously been deported, and returned to the United States illegally, police said.

The charges are in connection with the slashing of a man and a woman about 8 p.m. last Friday at a house on Second Street. The victims were treated at Stony Brook University Medical Center. The extent of their injuries were not known.
