Man shot in Greenport, 4 taken into custody, police chief says

A Greenport High School student was shot early Friday morning and four suspects are in custody in connection with the incident, police said.

The student, an 18-year-old man, was shot in the abdomen and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley said. Information about the suspects was not immediately available.

Southold police were called to North Street in Greenport Village about 1 a.m. Friday after reports of gunshots, police said in a news release. They found the victim, who was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Officers were given a description of a vehicle that may have been involved in the shooting, and they stopped a vehicle on Route 25 in Southold that matched the report, the release stated.

The vehicle's four occupants were taken to police headquarters in Peconic for interviews, while a K-9 unit discovered a gun and other "contraband," police said.

Police said "there is no reason to believe a threat still exists."

The incident did not occur on the Greenport High School campus or involve other high school students or activities, the release stated.

Greenport Superintendent David Gamberg wrote letters to district families telling them that counseling was available staff and students. 

"We have received news from the family that the student is stable, alert and responsive," Gamberg wrote.
