Eight people were arrested and one vehicle seized at a sobriety checkpoint overnight Friday into Saturday in Hauppauge, Suffolk County police said.

Officers from the Highway Patrol Bureau, assisted by the New York State Police, stopped 1,088 vehicles at the checkpoint at 575 Rte. 347/Veterans Memorial Hwy. from 11:10 p.m. Friday to 3:10 a.m. Saturday, Suffolk police said in a news release.

Those arrested hail from East Northport, Stony Brook, St. James, West Islip, Port Jefferson, Hauppauge and Smithtown, police said. Their ages range from 20 to 59; four were charged with driving while intoxicated and four for driving while ability impaired by drugs.

“The operation was conducted as part of the continuing summer enforcement efforts for the prevention of injuries and fatalities associated with driving while ability impaired by alcohol and drugs,” police said in the release.

They are all scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.
