Hausch talks briefly about night of Lucero stabbing
Nicholas Hausch, one of seven teens involved in the fatal hate-crime stabbing of an Ecuadorean immigrant in Patchogue, said Friday he "wouldn't go out" if he could redo the night of the attack.
In a brief interview Friday outside Stony Brook University Medical Center, Hausch, 18, said he's been spending time with his family. Hausch is the only one of the seven defendants who has remained out on bail.
When asked if he had any concerns about his safety since he testified for the prosecution, Hausch said, "Everyone has their worries."
Hausch pleaded guilty to gang assault and conspiracy in the hate-crime attack on Marcelo Lucero, who was stabbed to death in November 2008.
Hausch, of Medford, was the only one charged who testified against Jeffrey Conroy, who wielded the knife and was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime.
Hausch cooperated with authorities as part of a plea agreement and faces 5 to 25 years in prison on the top charge. No sentencing date has been set. His attorney, Jason Bassett of Central Islip, declined to comment.
