A Hempstead man who crashed his car into another vehicle during a brief police chase late Thursday was in possession of several forged documents, police said.

David Safran, 53, was charged with reckless endangerment, seven counts of possession of forged instruments and eight traffic or vehicle violations, Lt. Paul Johnson of the Hempstead Village Police Department said.

Officers had tried to stop Safran’s car about 9:30 p.m. at Fulton and Main streets after his license plate set off an alert on the officers’ electronic plate reader, Johnson said.

Safran drove away, but hit another vehicle about a block away, at Main and Front streets, the lieutenant said.

Two people in the other vehicle sustained injuries that were not serious, police said.

Safran’s arraignment was not immediately scheduled Friday because he was also hospitalized for injuries that were not serious, police said.
