A Hempstead man was charged Sunday in connection with an assault on his housemate with a pry bar, police said.

Orlando Nunez, 39, is charged with first-degree assault, two counts of first-degree burglary and fourth-degree possession of a dangerous weapon, Nassau County police said in a news release. He is to be arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Nunez began banging on the door of the victim, a 44-year-old man, around 10 a.m. in their Prospect Place home, police said. Police said Nunez kicked the door open, breaking the frame, and threatened to kill the other man.

Nunez hit the victim several times in the head with the pry bar, causing “large lacerations, contusions and bleeding,” police said. Other people in the house called police and Nunez was arrested at the home.

The victim was taken to the hospital, police said.
