A 22-year-old man was shot in the leg in front of a residence on Elmwood Avenue in Hempstead Monday night, police said.

The victim, who was hit once, was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition, police said.

His identity has not been released.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Nassau County police said they were called in to assist Hempstead Village police and said Tuesday that the investigation into the incident was "ongoing."

Nassau police did not detail how many shots were fired and declined to detail any possible motive.

Hempstead police declined to comment.

Nassau police had two department vehicles at the scene at about 11 p.m. Monday. One vehicle, a truck, was labeled “Emergency Service Unit.” A Nassau police van labeled “Crime Scene Search Unit” was parked behind yellow crime-scene tape.

In front of the tape, five yellow evidence-scene markers were on the street.
