A man has been charged after he allegedly shot a woman he was trying to rob in Hempstead last year, according to Nassau County police.
Morillo Chavez approached the victim on a moped near the intersection of Front Street and Sunset Drive in May 2024, officials said in a news release Saturday. Chavez, 21, of Manhattan, attempted to take her purse but the victim fought back, after which he shot her in the right arm with a handgun, police allege.
Chavez fled with the woman's purse and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment.
Nassau Police arrested Chavez "without incident" outside his home, according to the news release. He is charged with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree robbery. Those charges carry a combined sentence of up to 50 years in prison, if convicted.
Chavez is scheduled to appear in the First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday.
