The bicyclist who was killed two weeks ago in Coram when a hit-and-run driver struck him — throwing him into the roadway, where another driver then hit him — has been identified as a 53-year-old Coram man, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The victim is Edward White, and the hit-and-run driver remains at large, according to an email Wednesday from the department’s press office.

“An arrest has not been made and the investigation is ongoing,” the email said.

The identification of White, who lived on Homestead Drive, had been delayed until this week while the county medical examiner worked to confirm who he was, the department had previously said. The reason for the delay wasn’t explained.

The crash happened Wednesday at about 10:45 p.m. on the shoulder in front of 50 Middle Country Rd., as the bicyclist traveled east.

The first driver struck White by veering onto the shoulder. Whoever was driving that first vehicle — believed to be a light-colored SUV also being driven east — fled that same direction after striking White; the driver of the second vehicle, a 2015 Honda CR-V, a 32-year-old man that was behind the first vehicle, stayed at the crash scene. That driver wasn’t named by the police department.

The description of the hit-and-run driver's vehicle was based on witness accounts.
