Cops: Cyclist struck twice in deadly hit-and-run in Coram
A bicyclist was killed Wednesday night in Coram when a hit-and-run driver struck him — throwing him off the bicycle and into the roadway, where another driver then hit him, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
The police haven't yet been able to identify the bicyclist, according to a department news release, which said the crash happened about 10:45 p.m. on the shoulder in front of 50 Middle Country Rd., as the bicyclist traveled east.
The first driver struck the cyclist by veering onto the shoulder, according to an email from the department's press office.
Whoever was driving that first vehicle — believed to be a light-colored SUV being driven east as well — fled in the same direction after striking the bicyclist; the driver of the second vehicle, a 2015 Honda CR-V, a 32-year-old man behind the first vehicle, stayed at the crash scene, the release said.
The description of the hit-and-run driver's vehicle was based on witness accounts, the email Thursday morning said.
The bicyclist was taken to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, where he was declared dead, the release said.
